How to be a better son/daughter?
Being a son, I never thought of this. Do I have to be a better son? I always judged the ways others behaved with me. I was least interested in thinking about how I behave with others.
During an introspection of my own behavior, I realized I was being a stubborn and a very impatient son. Always demanding things I won’t really use. But, what is it that I can change in myself? How can one turn out to be a better son or a daughter?
To be frank, it is not going to be easy. You might be resilient in thinking that you are the best child your parents can have or you might be the best sibling. But, you’re comparing yourselves to others who have set the bar very low.
There are few things that you can do to change your behavior to become a better child to your parents.
1. Be patient
This is the one thing that everyone lacks, not just you, but your parents as well. In order to control a conversation or quarrel one of the people has to be patient enough to hear what others have to say before giving their own advice.
Stephen R. Covey wrote in his book “The 7 habits of highly effective people” – Seek First to understand, then to be understood.
2. Share more
I am not asking to share your chocolates but, the feelings that you have, the problems that you are facing with your parents. You don’t have to face your problems alone. There will be times when your friends might not be able to help you cope up with a problem. Just talk to your dad or mom that this is your problem I want to know how I should tackle it. They have more experience than you or your friends facing the hardships of life.
3. Don’t always say no
Whenever your mom asks you to take the garbage out you will say “Mom, I’m busy.” Even though you must be chatting with your friend or playing video game. This becomes a habit of saying no to everything our parents ask from us. The work will probably take 5 minutes of your time. So, the next your parents ask you do some small household chores; don’t just reply with a NO, help them.
4. Spend time with them
This must be the most important of all. You know this, but still deep down you ignore them because you get bored with them. They will talk about old stuff and things that don’t matter to you. Well, to be frank, none of the things we do daily matters to us. The only thing they seek is your time. Even when they are old, don’t just send them to an old age home. Keep them closer to you, spend time with them, and make them feel special because they are special.
Your boyfriend/girlfriends are temporary. They will come and go but your parents are the one who will stand by you forever.
I hope you are all doing well. If you think some more things should be added here, then let me know in the comments.
